You cleared NEET UG. That is a massive achievement, and you should be proud. But now comes the part that confuses even the brightest students — counselling. Which authority do you register with? Which website is official? What documents do you need, and when?
At Om Educare, we have seen too many deserving students lose their seats not because of poor scores, but because of confusion during the counselling process. This guide is our effort to make sure that does not happen to you.
Read this carefully. Bookmark it. Share it with your friends who are also waiting for counselling.
Before we get into state-wise details, let us quickly understand how the system is structured.
Medical admissions through NEET UG happen through two parallel processes:
All India Quota (AIQ) 15% of all government medical and dental college seats across India are filled by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), which operates under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The official website for AIQ counselling is mcc.nic.in
State Quota The remaining 85% of seats — along with private college seats, management quota, and NRI quota in many states — are managed by each state or union territory's own designated counselling authority. This is where most students need to pay close attention, because every state has its own rules, its own website, and its own deadlines.
The general steps for both AIQ and state counselling follow a similar pattern:
Important: If you are eligible for both AIQ and state counselling, apply for both. It maximises your chances. However, you can only accept and join one final seat.
This is not just a formality. Choosing the wrong portal — or worse, trusting an unofficial agent — can cost you your seat permanently.
Here is why the official counselling authority matters:
Authenticity — Only the designated official authority can offer you a valid, legally recognised medical seat. No private agent or consultant has that power, no matter what they promise.
Transparency — Merit lists, seat allotment results, and important notices are all published publicly on the official portal.
Grievance Support — If something goes wrong, only the official authority has a legitimate helpline and grievance redressal system.

Always verify the official website directly before registering. If you are unsure, call the helpline number listed on the official portal. Never rely on links shared through WhatsApp forwards or social media posts.
While requirements can vary slightly between states, the following documents are almost universally required. Start organising these now — do not wait for counselling to begin.
Scan all documents clearly and save them in both PDF and JPG formats. Keep physical originals safely together in a single folder for verification day at your allotted college.
These are real errors that real students make every year. Make sure you are not one of them.
Registering on unofficial websites — This is the most dangerous mistake. Fraudulent counselling portals exist specifically to trap students. Always type the official URL directly into your browser or use the link from the official NTA or state authority's notice.
Missing registration or document submission deadlines — Counselling schedules move fast. A single missed deadline can eliminate you from an entire round.
Uploading blurry or incorrect documents — Your application can be rejected during verification for poor quality scans or mismatched documents. Double-check everything before submitting.
Ignoring eligibility and domicile conditions — Each state has specific rules about who qualifies for the 85% state quota. Read the eligibility criteria thoroughly before applying.
Not checking the portal regularly — Notices, schedule changes, and seat allotment results can be released at any time. Check the official portal every single day during counselling season.
Prepare your documents before counselling opens. Do not scramble for certificates at the last moment. Get everything organised and verified in advance.
Bookmark the official portal for your state. Make it your home page during counselling season if you have to. Do not rely on search results — type the official URL directly.
Set reminders for every important date. Registration opening, choice filling deadline, seat allotment result, reporting date — put each one in your phone calendar with an alert one day before.
Apply for both AIQ and state quota if eligible. There is no reason to limit yourself. Cast the widest net possible and then make your final decision based on the allotment.
Keep backup copies of everything. Store digital copies on Google Drive or a pen drive, and keep photocopies of all originals. Losing documents on verification day is a situation you never want to be in.
Use only official helplines for queries. If you have doubts, call or email the official counselling authority directly. Do not trust advice from random online forums or WhatsApp groups.
The counselling process can feel overwhelming, but it is entirely manageable when you are well-informed and prepared. At Om Educare, we have supported hundreds of NEET aspirants not just through exam preparation, but through every stage of the admission journey.
The seat you worked so hard to earn deserves to be secured through the right process. Stay alert, stay official, and do not let misinformation or last-minute panic cost you what is rightfully yours.
Your medical career begins with the right first step. Take it wisely.
